Flash and Marketing

I've been working on a new post about IPTV but it's going to have to wait. I really do believe there's a paradigm shift coming in distribution models for independent filmmakers though. In the meantime I thought I'd post a bit about my experiences making my website "embedder" friendly. What do I mean by that? Well, it all boils down to Flash. Youtube, Vimeo, Revver, CollegeHumor... the all use a form of Flash file for their video. This reduces file size and makes the file very compatible across many different browsers and operating systems.

The small file size also allows the creator to allow the user to copy a short embed code to paste the video into their favorite blog or social networking page! Over the next few weeks I'm going to be testing some software and eventually updating ALL of my videos with Flash rather than Quicktime. In some cases there will still be downloadable high-resolution versions of the videos as well.

Below you can see the fruit of my labor thus far. Feel free to compare it to the Quicktime version found on my video page!

Wow

You know when you see movies ads that say "Now playing in New York and Los Angeles"? I LIVE IN LOS ANGELES! I could totally see them!

If I had a life and money.

In the meantime, see how I'm spending my free time:

An aside to you editors I've worked with - THANK YOU. I've learned a lot from you guys and well, let's just say I can't wait to work with any and all of you again in the near future. The final installment in this three-part series should be up by this evening. Stay tuned!

Snow Day playing on FangoriaTV

Fangoria will be showing "Snow Day, Bloody Snow Day," on their channel/podcast?/thingy beginning February 16th. Check it out, let them know what you think! A good showing could mean more goodies from GadZook Films in the very near future, so be sure to tell them how much you enjoy it!

Snow Day, the Breadwinner

I just faxed over a deal to get Snow Day packaged with something that Fangoria is putting together. They aren't selling anything yet, and even if they were we'd get a fraction of a percentage, but the point is there's exposure involved and technically this is more distribution than many films ever get. So I'm fairly pleased. The bonus is they're working on an infrastructure which may allow them the ability to look at more scripts, so I'm developing that relationship with them.

In other news, I've decided that in most cases it's just not worth it to make short films. The amount of money to make even a short-short look and sound good (assuming the script is dynamite which... 9 times outta 10 it's not) is quite pricey. Relying on friends to give up a few weekends to make such a short after everything else they've volunteered for is just not right!

So, for the time being, this blog will be pretty slow. The odd commentary about other people's movies which I have only a heretical right in commenting on will continue ad infinitum.

There are other projects in the works here but nothing I can discuss. So... with that cryptic last message have a great holiday and I'll see you next year!
